Valedictorian Le Ngoc Hieu, K9 Software Engineering student, had a remarkable achievement board with 2 times honouring as Golden Toad and 4 times awarding as excellent students of FPT University. These achievement are a resurgence after spending 8 years in a national university where he could not graduate.
Losing 8 years because of game online
Since Hieu was a high school student, he’s in love with mathematical and computer. Therefore, Hieu determined to pursue information technology. After the university’s entrance exam, Hieu was received as high quality French engineer at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology with a high score.
Coming to Ho Chi Minh city to enroll, he was out of sight of parents. With the love of online games, he started to play and get addicted soon. “As a result, when my classmates graduated, then I owed the university nearly 30 subjects,” Hieu recalled.
Realizing the mistakes, Hieu started to study all day and night to finish the course but it was too late. Graduation project was completed when Hieu passed the milestone of 8 years – the maximum school year.
Looking at friends of the same age who have been working for a few years and some has reached the management position, Hieu felt upset and disoriented. Putting the regret and shame aside, the man from Buon Me Thuot accepted as freshman to pursue his passion on IT industry.
Do again, do better
“Accidentally, I knew about the additional admission of FPT University. It was October and the university entrance examination almost passed. Therefore, I decided to apply to FPT University to follow my passion with IT,” Hieu shared. Completed the preparatory English program and adapted all other academic requirement, Hieu officially became a student of FPT University in Fall Semester 2014.
With an open and passionate learning environment at FPT University, Hieu was strengthened to complete his unfinished career path. “FPT University has a very comfortable and friendly learning environment. The program is close to the practice that helped me a lot when I start working,” he highlighted. “Especially at FPT University, I learned English and Japanese which become great advantages when applying for jobs as well as work later”.
In addition to studying, Hieu also arranges time to participate in seminars at the university to share specialized knowledge or soft skills to improve himself. In love with sports, especially badminton, Hieu did not miss any tournament at university and he always got prizes.
Starting later than friends, when studying at FPT, Hieu also arranged to work and participate in real projects in an IT company. This has brought him a lot of useful experience so upon completing graduation project, Hieu worked at a software company in Singapore – Knorex with competitive salary.
In that way, Hieu has written his new student life in the joy when he had chance to pursue his passion. The result of these efforts is the excellent 8 semesters, of which, 2 semesters are honored as Golden Toad- the title for students of IT industry who have the highest score.
“Managing time properly and avoiding deadline are my secret,” he shared. “To be able to acquire knowledge effectively, you must pay attention on the lecture to keep up. Lecturers of FPT University are very friendly so you can ask questions in class or by email”.
With Hieu, graduating 8 years later than friends is not something to worry about. “It is important that I can pursue my passion,” he proudly stated. The failure in the past has always been a lesson so that the valedictorian of FPT University do not allow himself to waste time on unnecessary things. Therefore, he is trying harder to get more good opportunities in future career.
Looking back on what he has, Hieu shared in the graduation ceremony that “After 4 years studying, what I gain most is the specialized knowledge. In addition to that, FPT University also trained the study and research method to receive knowledge in a short time as well as teamwork skills. The decision to go to FPT University is still a good choice and I am very satisfied with what I have now”.
