Founded in 2006, FPT University – the first university in Vietnam established by an enterprise – has reached the next level to become FPT Education Group in 2016 with new strategy and vision to become an international Education Group which targeted 150.000 students by 2025.
With the philosophy of being a new university generation with modern education, FPT University aims to bring realistic training and education for students in order to help Vietnam keep pace with the world. The notable value of FPT University is the close cooperation with business that can combine training with reality and the most modern technologies.
Dr. Nguyen Khac Thanh- Rector of FPT University shared with local media about the hard path of pioneering education and the sweet success of the corporation.
Q: As one of the founders of FPT University, can you tell us what kind of inspiration has brought a technology corporation into education?
A: The first milestone for the establishment of FPT Education is 1999. At that time, the future of the corporation was discussed with the new direction of exporting the software to the world. Therefore, FPT needs to have good programmers and IT engineers, so education development is a must.
In 1999, we trained IT professions following the training program of APTECH India. This is a breakthrough in the technology as well as Vietnamese society at that time.
From the very first day, Mr. Truong Gia Binh- FPT Chairman wished to build FPT University into a big name in the education sector of Vietnam. Therefore, all development activities of FPT Education always focus on two major points. The first one is to train the students to participate in the global playground. Secondly, FPT Education not only contributes high- quality students but also solves the problem of training for the majority of learners.
At the beginning, when Mr. Binh set the target of training 50,000 students, we all thought this was a very large number. However, we realized that to become a Mega University, the institution must have at least 100,000 students. Therefore, we set a target of 150,000 students by 2020, of which, the number of foreign students is expected to account for 15 per cent.
Q: In your opinion, what are the key decisions that have made the success of FPT University today?
A: Success at FPT University begins with a strong comprehension of the English language. Because our rigorous courses are taught in English and move at a fast pace, fluency in the language is necessary for understanding concepts and expressing yourself effectively.
Secondly, the curricula with practical-oriented design have helped narrow the gap between education and industry demand. FPT students are provided the best conditions for professional development including languages, personal development, social awareness, soft skills and on the job training (OJT) to meet the requirements to be qualified experts in a global working environment.
This advantage is due to the fact that FPT University is established by an enterprise . FPT Education and FPT Software always accompany together. FPT Software will be a good place for students to work and experience.
This is the difference that very little of universities not only in Vietnam but also in the world have.
Q: What has FPT University equipped for students to prepare for the Industry 4.0?
A: Each student is always learning and operating in a very open, young, creative and competitive environment. The learning environment at FPT University is similar to the business environment. We have successfully trained a generation of students who have a high determination of entrepreneurial spirit.
Personally, I think that the large playground will create great leaders. The university should be a ideal place to prepare for learners. At FPT University, we have technology courses and training program on soft skills and start-up and team spirit. In addition, we have a separate department called the Personality Development Program (PDP). All of these factors make students live in a natural Start-up environment.
Q: Can you share about the internationalization of FPT Education?
A: “Internationalization” is one of the important criteria for evaluating the success of a university in the prestigious international education rankings. The score for this section are based on the number of foreign faculty members and students who are working and studying at the university, as well as partnerships with reputable universities to write articles, etc.
Internationalization is very difficult for many Vietnamese universities because we do not have strong national brand. For example, countries such as Japan, Korea, USA, etc. have strong brand so their universities get a lot of benefit from national reputation.
However, this is what FPT University is doing well and is proud to be one of the best performing university in Vietnam. Currently, we have lecturers from more than 10 countries all over the world such as UK, USA, New Zealand, Philippines, etc. For learners, FPT University not only send students abroad, but also attracts international students.
Many foreign students come to FPT University to study, not for short-term exchanges just to get the “Vietnamese” certification, but to get a degree in Information Technology, Business Administration, etc. The number of international students both in short-term and long-term program in 2017 reached about 500.
Q: How does the FPT Education prepare for the coming changes in the education sector in Vietnam and in the world?
A: Currently we are implementing both training models including on campus training and FUNiX online training. Each training method has its own value.
With the online training program, learners receive a lot of new values such as saving time to go to school, taking advantage of the prestigious learning materials on the Internet, and being guided by the prestigious professors.
Traditional training allows students to communicate directly with teachers and classmates to feel the competition and pressure from the environment, as well as have a real learning experience.
I see that the future learning model will be the interference between the two models. Learners will be more active in learning by both using the advantages of technology and enjoying the value of traditional schools.
