Int’l computational linguistics scientists meet in Vietnam

Nearly 100 scientists, fellows and students from 10 countries around the world attended the the 16th International Conference of the Pacific Association for Computer Linguistics (PACLING 2019), held from October 11-13 in Hanoi. PACLING 2019 is one of the important conferences to promote the scientific research movement in Vietnam, while affirming the significant role of FPT Education in the international academic community.

Speaking at the conference, Dr. Nguyen Khac Thanh – Rector of FPT University, Co-Chair of the PACLING 2019 said: FPT University always has policies to encourage scientific research among staffs, lecturers and students. We expect this conference will be an opportunity for the universitys research community to enhance the connection with the worlds leading experts and seeking scientific cooperation in the coming time.”

Dr. Nguyen Khac Thanh affirms that FPT University will hold many international scientific conferences as PACLING 2019.

Prof. Koiti Hasida – The University of Tokyo, Japan, Co-Chair of PACLING 2019 stressed that: “The conference is a great opportunity for local researchers to connect with international colleagues, especially who from Asian countries, for further development of natural language processing and AI in the country”.

He also believed that the use of AI and natural language processing will not consume too many resources, thus, they’re very suitable for developing countries as Vietnam. The deployment of data and smart applications will accelerate the process of building a smart city in the future, where infrastructure and services will be associated with the needs of the residents.

This year conference welcomes 4 keynote speakers from leading universities in the world, who received many major awards at international scientific conferences.

Prof. Kentaro Inui, Tohoku University, Japan gave a talk about “Natural Language Understanding and Assessment”.
Prof. Danushka Bollegala, University of Liverpool, United Kingdom shared his research on “Overcome limitations in Lexical Representations via Meta- embed Learning”.
Dr. Kentaro Torisawa, Data-driven Intelligent System Research Center (DIRECT), National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan presented the research on “Two Dialog Systems for Two Extreme Environments: WEKDA and SOCDA”.
Prof. Tomoko Matsui, The Institute of Statistical Mathematics, Tokyo, Japan had the presentation on “Speech processing and deep learning – the latest research development trends”

The conference also has the participants of students from many universities in the country. Speaker Nguyen Quoc Viet from Hanoi University of Science and Technology brought to PACLING 2019 the presentation on “Using text features to create a quality Vietnamese summary”. Coming to the conference, Viet expects to propose new suggestions on Vietnamese data in order to improve the old model currently in use. “Students like us do not have the financial ability to go abroad to attend major international conferences. I am very happy that FPT University organized PACLING, bringing advanced scientific knowledge closer to us”- Viet excitedly shared.

I expect that Vietnamese younger could pay attention to more broaden area, then they can develop more and more interesting topics in natural language processing in the future”, Co-Chair of PACLING 2019, Prof. Satoshi Tojo, JAIST Japan answered when asked about PACLING’s message to young Vietnamese researchers.

During the three days of the conference, about 40 reports will be presented. These valuable reports are expected to contribute to promoting the application of computer linguistics in the socio-economic development, science and education such as the voice recognition system, automated voice answering systems, language teaching materials…. Along with report presentations, businesses and researchers also bring to PACLING the most advanced products in Computational Linguistics.

The 16th Conference on Computational Linguistics of Pacific – Asia (Pacling) is hosted by FPT University in collaboration with the University of Science and the University of Technology – Vietnam National University Hanoi, as well as the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. This is an annual science event, which attracts numerous famous scientists across Pacific-Asia. The event will occur in 3 days, from October 11 to October 13 at Hilton Hotel, Hanoi.
