FPT Won the ‘Dinosaur’ Project in Japan

First time in FPT’s history, FPT Japan will take the role of a Systems Integrator (SI), providing consultation and problem solving of technology to end users.

After more than two months of access, FPT Japan has brought in large projects valued at tens of USD millions; lasting for 3 years with staff’s working hours at peak 60-80 onsite and 600 to 800 offshore people. Its customers are listed on the stock exchange, specializing in making ERP packages for small and medium enterprises in the sunrise nation.

“Customers are actively deploying Fintech (business of financial services based on technology) in Vietnam and South East Asia markets. In addition to the Japanese vendors, they need more Vietnamese partners to cooperate, and FPT was selected,” said Mr. Le Tren Nen – the Project Director.

With more than 40 years of experience in the Japanese market, customers are expected to collaborate with FPT with the aim of helping them develop new products from scratch, including ERP modules such as financial accounting, personnel, wages and property management.

Participating in this project, FPT will build the perfect ERP system to deploy for a large number of small and medium enterprises in Japan. This is an opportunity for FPT to demonstrate its competence in high-demand processes in software projects as well as apply advanced technologies in building the architecture system.

The first phase of the project will last for 4 months, from June to September 2017, which includes document translation, inquiries and investigations; develops the architecture, framework, API, utility for the project, evaluates the system, and proposes an overall development plan.

The official phase will be begun in October 2017 in two parts. For part 1, it is expected that FPT will complete the entire Common Sub System and the most important part of the Financial Accounting System (accounting for more than half of the total workload of the whole system) by September 2018. The company will carry out steps of internal design, implementation, unit testing (UT) and pre-integration testing, focus on functional testing (Pre-IT, FPT’s assignment). Based on PreIT results, customers will continue to give contracts for FPT as Time and Material Contract. Customer support will be going until the first product of the system, Go-live taken place in March 2019.

In the second part of its official phase, FPT is expected to finish in September 2019 for the remaining three sub-sectors, including salary management, asset management, sales management and Go-Live customer support system in March 2020.

According to Mr. Nen, FPT’s biggest challenge in this project is that the customer’s subject does not have enough “inputs”. The client’s problem is to rebuild the old system, which is running on Delphi without giving source code. They want to rewrite the request and FPT will make the proposal. Currently, the inputs are quite fuzzy, with new functions (function list), FPT must use the old version of user-manual to visualize the complexity of the screen.

The FPT team has mobilised enormous resources to read a total of more than 4,000 screens and more than 3,000 reports, estimating the huge overall complexity. “Customers haven’t had any strategies to hit the project, whereas they are also trying to find a way to do it, FPT must determine carefully to give the reference size so that customers can accept their initial cost. FPT always follows its customers’ directions,” Nen said.

First time in the position of “general contractor”, FPT Japan will complete the product from A-Z. In particular, in the ERP, although the team has deployed the support on the offshore but the problem is not only partial assignments but the construction in general. With nearly 1,000 people working per year, FPT Japan has to take the initiative to solve the customer’s expectations.

To solve this problem, FPT Software had to mobilize resources from different FSUs with the support from the CLI (Cloud Development Team) to provide matching quotes and to connect resources with the purpose of ensuring the work schedule.

Mr. Nen said that the project is good news but how to deliver products on time is not really a simple problem. “FPT needs to maintain the right path and building a core team is crucial than ever to ensure the quality and progress. I expect executive boards commit to mobilize the best resources at the FSUs to participate in the battle. Like any projects, individual efforts and teamwork power will help us gain the goal, “the Project Manager emphasized.

In addition, the project’s success also depends on detailed planning, training, types of documents, tools, frameworks made from core teams besides mobilising large resources. “For members, in addition to professional requirements, to participate in this competition, the desire and promotion are the most important criterion,” Nen said.

At present, the company needs human resources for the project preparation phase, which lasts from June to September. In particular, the positions that are necessarily recruited during the first phase of the project are BA (Business Analyst), Project Manager, Team Lead (TL) and BrSE. Beside professional competence, applicants need to have N2 or above.
