The shift in the automotive industry from mechanical to software not only breaks the monopoly of car manufacturers but also opens up great opportunities for technology companies that do not have experience in automobile business such as Google, Tesla, Uber, Lyft, Apple, Baidu, etc. and FPT Software.
Nearly 300 technology experts, engineers, and students participated in a seminar on the Future of Automobile Technology and Robotics in the Industrial Revolution 4.0, taking place on April 15 at Melia Hotel, Hanoi. In this event, FPT Software specialists shared about growing trends in technology of automotive sector in the context of the 4th industrial revolution such as robotics, image processing, embedded software.
FGA Production Director Mr. Dinh Duc Hiep said that the automobile industry is undergoing a big shift. Car is now like a computer, not simply a mechanical system. Compared to the two to three decades before, 35% of a car’s cost came from electronic system and software. In the next 10 years, 90% of car innovations that bring new value to automobiles will come from software. This is a great opportunity for FPT.
In order to catch up with this trend, over the past three years, FPT Software has focused on research and development (R&D) of new technologies, especially on automotive technology. The company has many R&D programs, building up the “hot” sections that are attracting attention of automotive community such as the passerby warning system, automatic lane detection, etc.
It is expected that luxury cars sold in Asia in the next two years are going to be equipped with entertainment systems made by FPT. Currently, FPT has been participated in producing all of the system related to control, electronics in the car already.
Mr. Hoang Nam Tien, chairman of FPT Software, shared that when the whole world talked about IoT (Internet of Things), FPT Software had already talked about IoV (Internet of Vehicles). The launch of FGA (FPT Global Automotive), a unit specializing in studying and developing automotive technology solutions in 2016 has captured the opportunities of V2X ((Vehicle to everything) and mobility.
Currently, FGA has 1,500 people working in Automotive including hardware, software and mechanical design. The company has enough resources to make complete components in the car. It is expected that by the end of 2017, FGA will grow by 70% with 2,000 staff.
“Our self-driving car is planned to appear in Hoa Lac in October” said FPT Software Chairman.
In the conference, participants also listened to in-depth opinions of experts, such as the Development of Robot Technology, conducted by Le Hung Cuong, Deputy Director of FPT Software Solutions & Technology Unit (STU); Challenges and difficulties in developing image processing technology for Automotive sector by Sébastien Eskenazi, computer vision specialist at FPT Software and learning about working environment at ODC with clear career path.
Especially, at the event, FPT Software’s technology experts demonstrated several advanced driver assistance solutions (ADAS) such as lane identification; 360 sensor camera; obstructions, traffic lights, traffic signs detection; body control module of car, etc. Some of these solutions are now being implemented by FPT Software and its partners in a number of high-end models. They are leading car manufacturers in Japan and Europe.
FPT Software has started joining in this sector with Japanese and American giants since about 10 years ago. Up to present, FPT Software has been implementing 150 projects related to automotive technology for customers in Japan, South Korea, Europe and the US. The automotive technology solutions are expected to reach $200 million in revenue by 2020 with labor scale of 8,000 employees. In 2017, FPT Software needs to recruit around 1,000 IT engineers and technology specialists for automotive technology solutions. Depending on position, the salary can be up to $2,000 with short-term and long-term working opportunities in Japan, South Korea, Europe.
